NEWSFLASH: Here's this new thing for writers -- platform. It's a word in our vocabulary which means all the ways in which you market, promote and sell yourself and your work. It almost replaces the old word "marketing."
I'm sorry to say, it's not only embarking on the business end of this wonderful profession, it means you can't hide in your cave anymore. Contrary -- I know -- to what I'd really like to do. I love my cave. Fortunately, the internet makes "getting out there" a piece of cake -- websites, facebook, tweeting, blogs.
Just remember, dear writers -- your real job is to write those stories. Fall into THAT work first. Study platforming the way you once studied marketing. Writing and learning to sell have always gone hand in hand -- if that's what you intend to do with your stuff. While you're on the internet, or are speaking to library groups, get it written. Let it be first. Fall into your own book before you fall into facebook. Discipline yourself and the time you'll spend platforming.
So! Get off this blog, for today, and work on your poems. Finish the book. Write, write, write. Let that be first in your mind and heart.
